During the 1980s decade, a naturally occurring baculovirus was isolated from cassava hornworm Erinnyis ello ello (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) and successfully applied as biopesticide to control this pest in Brazil. Notwithstanding the relative success of this program, the available information about the genetic diversity of EeGV is limited. Thus, we described the structure and the complete sequence of virus genome. The baculovirus presented granular occlusion bodies with single virions inside the protein matrix. The virus genome, in turn, presented 102,759 bp and a low G+C content (38.7%). It was greater than the previous estimation of 90,000 ± 5,000 bp based on restriction mapping for the still not sequenced Colombian isolate. We found 130 putative ORFS in EeGV. Of the 130 ORFs predicted, 122 are homologous to at least one other baculovirus gene. Moreover, eight are unique to EeGV (Ee012, Ee015, Ee027, Ee053, Ee059, Ee070, Ee090, Ee102), and most of them are peptides with no homologues in GeneBank. The 37 core genes found in all sequenced baculovirus were also found in EeGV genome. Interestingly, no typical homologous regions (hrs) were detected, which was similar to the genome of most close phylogenetically related viruses Choristoneura occidentalis granulovirus (ChocGV) and Pieris rapae granulovirus (PiraGV). Additionally, EeGV presented two independent acquisitions of Densovirus nonstructural genes (Ee057 and Ee100) suggesting that recombination events between insect viruses from unrelated families (e.g. BaculoviridaedsDNA and Parvovirdae-ssDNA) are possible and maybe a common event. Overall, both the viral diversity and the genome stability are crucial for an effective management in biological control programs, and the most efficient way to access information is sequencing the complete genome of the pathogen.
