This research is concerned with a study of the relations between international trade and economic growth, with particular reference to the less developed countries. A fairly strong current of economic thought has for some time now argued that the low income countries are net losers in their trade with the advanced countries, and the changes in the terms of trade are an appropriate index of these losses. The maintained hypothesis of this thesis is that whether a country gains or loses from trade depends on more than what happens to the terms of trade. Accepted trade theory is used to develop a framework for analyzing factores which affect the gains from trade A model which includes foreign investment and growth is used for the basic analysis. The analysis leads to equations that provide a measure of the gains from trade, and which can be used to make precise statements about the relationships between the terms of trade and thegains from trade. An important conclusion from the anlytical work is that it is possible for the gains from trade to be of a contrary sign to changes in the terms of trade. This can occur, for example, when imports are uniportant compared to remittances abroad as payments to foreign capital. Computation of the terms of trade for Brazil was integral part of the research. For Brazil, the terms of trade trended downward for the period 1953-1975. However, this was due in large part to a peak that ocurred in the early 1950's. For the period 1960-1973, the terms of trade leveled off, with virtualy no trend either upward or downward. There were reather substantial short-run fluctuations in the terms of trade in this period however.
