Acclimation is important for the survival of the plants of wheat in regions where the incidence of early frosts is frequent. The work objective was to verify the influence of the acclimatization in making wheat tolerant to the frost. The work was carried out in screen house at Embrapa – Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Trigo (Embrapa – National Wheat Research Center), Passo Fundo, RS. Frost was simulated in a growth chamber (Conviron 4030). The wheat cultivars BR18 and BRS 194 were used, in two thermal regimes: acclimated and not acclimated. In both treatments, frost was simulated at the growth stages of elongation and heading. In the acclimated treatment the plants remained for three days in the growth chamber before frost simulation. The temperature regime for this period varied from 2 to 12 ºC. Frost was simulated in the fourth day with minimum temperature of 7 °C. The treatment of acclimation, for both cultivars, resulted in higher dry matter accumulation at physiological maturation, when frost was applied at the elongation. Frost at heading stage, in both to cultivars, independent of acclimation, resulted in total sterility without grain formation. |
