The mineral status investigations were carried out on cattle blood plasma and herbage samples from twenty-four sites on twenty-two farms in Acholi and Lango districts from which collections took place during 1969 and 1970. Blood plasma was analysed for calcium, magnesium and inorganic phosphorus while for the herbage samples, nitrogen, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus levels are reported. Herbage nitrogen, potassium, magnesium and manganese levels were considered to be adequate for dairy cattle. Phosphorus and sodium levels were found to be deficient and calcium levels were grossly inadequate for dairy cattle nutrition. However, very few individual plasma samples revealed subnormal mineral in all the cattle sampled. It is suggested that the ge area of high raiunfall in these two districts is suitable for day farming and that the lower rainfall area is suitable for beef production. Furthermore, dairy cattle pasture management, in the districts, should include the growing of leguminous plants which are known to grow well and can greatly improve the nitrogen, mineral and dry matter intake by livestock. |
