Research was conducted on the Texas A&M Native Plant and Animal Conservancy near College Station, located in the Post Oak Savannah region of Texas, to determine the relationship of dietary nutrition of free roaming steers and associative fecal variables. Regression equations were used to evaluate relationships between dietary intake and quality to fecal parameters. Dietary crude protein, digestible organic matter, organic matter intake, percent of body weight intake, crude protein intake, digestible energy intake, and fecal output were determined from previous studies. Fecal samples were analyzed for fecal nitrogen, proportions and concentrations of nitrogen fractions in fecal organic matter, fecal condensed tannis, proportions of fecal monocot and dicot fragments, and fecal organic matter. In general no fecal parameters by itself had a high correlation with the dependent variables. A combination of fecal indexes gave reasonable results for prediction of, dietary crude protein and crude protein intake, but relationships with the other dietary parameters were low. Twenty-five samples were selected from the full data set for testing four different nitrogen extraction techniques. As a whole, the variable proportion of insoluble nitrogen under NDFN extraction without sodium sulfite, presented higher relationships to dietary parameters than the other independent variables. Losses of tannin-N complex, lignin-N complex, and disulfide bound protein under NDFN extraction, and hemicellulose under ADFN extraction, could...
