The objectives and principles of sampling vegetation are discussed and a canopy-coverage technique is described. Forty plots each 20 x 50 cm are spaced systematically along a tape, and the coverage, interpreted as a vertical projection of a polygon drawn about the undisturbed canopy, is estimated separately for each taxon in each plot. Coverage classes recorded in the field are: 0-5, 5-25, 25-50, 50-75, 75-95, and 95-100 per cent. In subsequent calculations of average coverage for the series of plots the midpoint of each class is used. This method is applicable to a wide variety of vegetation types so long as the plants are not much more than one meter tall. |
