Livestock numbers and animal production statistics for the main climatic zones and natural pasture regions of northern Australia have been computed from relevant current sources. Within these regions the important factors affecting animal production are discussed and the potential for further improvement in productivity considered. Queensland carries c. 80% of the cattle and 96% of the sheep in northerm Australia and the level of productivity of the livestock in Queensland is greater than in the Northern Territory and in the north of Western Australia. The arid zone accounts for a suprising 40% of the value of total annual animal product in northern Australia (1977-80 statistics). In the humid zone, improved pastures can increase productivity by as much as six-fold but in 1977-80 they accounted for only 10-15% of the zone's pastoral productivity. In the arid zone improved pastures accounted for less than 5% of the production. Thus the majority of Australia's northern livestock industry is still maintained on antive pasture. The adequate recognition of this provides a basis for production options whilst maintaining or restoring the long-term stability of the native pastures by means of futher research. |
