Fifty-six days after primary experimental infection of lambs per os, with 2000 infective larvae of Oesophagostomum columbianum to each lamb, varying-sized nodules were ob-
served in small and large intestine, mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, kidneys, pancreas and uterus of the lambs. Microscopically, the nodules contained a mass of necrotic tissue along with a large number of macrophages, epithelioid cells and, at times, giant cells. The necrotic mass was surrounded by fibrous tissue proliferation, infiltrated with lymphocytes and eosinophils. Clear worm tracts were observed in some cases in the mesentric lymph nodes and liver. In some cases, sections of the larvae were seen in the peripheral region of the nodules in the large intestyine, kidneys and liver. |
