The evaluation of different phosphate parameters (intensity, capacity, and composite fac-
tors) for the assessment of available soil phosphorus was carried out with the aid of phos-
phorus-32, in alluvial and calcareous soils. There was no significant correlation existing between P content in rye and the intensity factor which represents the concentration of phosphate in the soil solution extracted by 0.01 M CaCl2 in alluvial and calcareous soil. Capacity factor measured by means of isotopic exchange techniques and the bicarbonate method, were higly correlated with the actual amount of P taken up by ryegrass plant for both alluvial and calcareous soils. The E 14 days technique gave the highest correlation followed by the L-value, then the E 18 hrs, whereas the bicarbonate technique gave the lowest value. Thus, the isotopically exhangeable P is valuable in assessing its availability to plants. Composite factor measured by removing the phosphate from ther solution phase by anion exchange resin gave the highest degree of correlation which supports the hypo-
thesis that the rate of replenishment of the soil solution with phosphate must be taken into consideration. |
