Evaluation of a new plant accession begins at the moment of collection, by an ecological study of the accession in its native habitat. In a search for suitable legumes for pastures in
the dry tropics of Australia, plants were collected from regions with comparable climates in
Brazil and Venezuela. Environmental data were collected for all accessions, particular at-
tention being paid to soil characteristics; numerical methods of classification and ordina-
tion were used to simplify the data so obtained. Within any given geographical region, dis-
tribution is shown to be closely related to climate and soil, soil mineral level being of par-
ticular importance. It has been possible to characterize the ecological amplitude of the
species collected, and thus to make tentative predictions as to the areas of Australia to
which they might be adapted. It is submitted that studies of this type are likely to be of va-
lue in the collection, evaluation and utilization of genetic resources. |
