A new method of transcribing visually-recorded behavioural data is described, to facilitate rapid computer processing; it is applied to a total of 31 animals (bulls, cows and calves) in the Markham Valley, Papua New Guinea. There is no evidence of seasonal variation. Approximately one-third of grazing is carried out at night, so that night yarding is not indicated without further investigation. Total times spent in recorded activities are comparable with those for temperate climates. There is evidence for an effecta of breed, in that animals with more than half-shorthorn ancestry show a marked reduction in mid-day grazing. |

Tropical forests account for a quarter of the global carbon storage and a third of the terrestrial productivity. Few studies have teased apart the relative importance of environmental factors and forest attributes for ecosystem functioning, especially for the tropics. This study aims to relate aboveground biomass (AGB) and biomass dynamics (i.e., net biomass productivity and its underlying demographic drivers: biomass recruitment, growth and mortality) to forest attributes (tree diversity, community-mean traits and stand basal area) and environmental conditions (water availability, soil fertility and disturbance). |
