Muskmelon (Cucumis melo Linn.) varieties and germplasm were collected from 4 states for screening them for resistance to powdery mildew [Sphaerotheca fuliginea (Schlecht. ex Fr. Poll and Eryiphe cichoracearum DC] and downy mildew [Pseudoperonospora cubensis (Berkeley & Curtis) Rostowzew. 'Diguria' and 'Haragola' varieties form Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh were immune to powdery mildew. A high level of resistance to powdery mildew was noticed in a majority of the varieties. But resistance to downy mildew was lacking in ail the collections. Disease-progress curves showing relative areas under disease-progress curves proved useful for quantitative determination of resistance and susceptibility of muskmelon to the mildew diseases. |
