The hill region of Uttar Pradesh is one of the five agro-climatic regions in which the State of Uttar Pradesh has been divided. The regioes comprises eight districts and extends over an arca of about 51,100 sq. km. which is 17.4 per cent of the total area of the State. According to the 1971 Census, the population of the region was 38.22 lakhs which was only 4.3 per cent of the Statc's total population. Agriculture which is the main occupation of the majority of people living in the region still continues to be, by and large, primitive and backward. It is characterized by predominance of marginal and small farms and low resource productivity. According to the Agricultural Census 1970, about 68 per cent of the total number of 5.97 lakh operational holdings in the region were less than one hectare in size and about 94 per cent lessthan three hectares. |
