Free and bound phenolics were extracted from the leaves of sexually differentiated male and female plants of papaya (Carica papaya L.) and also from the leaves of vegetative seedlings at the nursery stage. These leaf extracts were subjected to 10 colorimetric tests specific to phenolics, and differences in colour reactions in both types of leaf extracts were studied. Based on these colour reactions, sex forecasts were made in vegetative seedlings at the nursery stage. The "Prussian blue" and "total phenolics" tests were found to be highly efficient in making sex forecasts of vegetative seedlings. The precision of sex forecasts in the "Prussian blue" test was 80% in female plants and 60% in male plants. While under the "total phenolics" test the precision was 86% and 77% in female and male plants respectively. The possible use of phenolic tests in sex forecasts of papaya seedlings at the preflowering stage is suggested. |
