Malformation, arguably the most important disease of mango (Mangifera indical L.) worldwide, is of growing concern because it is widespread and destructive and because its etiology and control are not well understood. Numerous studies have attempted to determine the nature of the disease since its recognition in India in 1891 (75), producting over publications since 1910 (7), although many of these add little to our knowledge of etiology or control. A recent chapter (28) on mango malformation deals comprehensively with the disease, including its physiology. Thi review aims to consolidate and clarify existing knowledge, particulary on etiology and control, and to indentify future areas of research that might be useful in soloving this "century-old" disease. |
