Estes são: Galtrol-A e Agrocin (Agrobacterium radiobacter, estirpe K84); Quantum-4000 (Bacillus subtilis, estirpe GBO3); YIB (Bacillus spp. ); Nogall (A. radiobacter, estirpe KIO26); Dagger G (Pseudomonasfluorescens); Kodiak (B. subtilis, estirpe GBO3 melhorada); Kodiak plus (B. subtilis, estirpe GBO3 melhorada + Apron + Terraclor) e Blue circle (P. cepacia, isolado tipo Wisconsin). At the fourth year before ending the 20th century, agriculture faces a difficult challenge for enhancing crop production with sustainability. Currently, twenty tive billion dollars are spent in fungicides per year in the world, and this amount shall be considerably reduced in the turning of the century. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) as bioprotectors and yield stimulators wiII probably be one of the most significant tactics of disease management in the next century and in the third millenium. This review will focus on the current knowledge and progress on the PGPRs research and development. Emphasis will be given on the mechanisms of action of PGPRs, both on the direct effect on plant growth and in the indirect effect as bioprotectors. The status of commercial use of PGPRs in current agronomic systems will be informed. Up to now, eight, products and three PGPRs genera have been marketed throughout the worldl. These include: Galtrol-A and Agrocin (Agrobacterium radiobacter, strain K84); Quantum-4000 (Bacillus subtilis, strain GB03); YIB (Bacillus spp.); Nogall (A. radiobacter, strain K1026); Dagger G; (Pseudomonas fluorescens); Kodiak (B. subtilis, improved GB03 strain); kodiak plus (B. subtilis, improved GB03 strain + Apron + terraclor); and Blue circle (P. cepaia, type Wisconsin). In addition, the future perspectives of PGPR, research and development will be discussed.
