This research was designed to measure accumulation of tissue phosphorus and zinc in sweet corn inbreds and their hybrid progeny following high rates of phosphorus fertilization. Five lines, crossed in diallel combination including reciprocals, to give 20 hybrids, provided the genetic basis for these studies. Also a sixth line was crossed with each of the five lines to give five test crosses. Response was measured at three levels of phosphorus fertilization. Determinations were made of concentration of kernel phosphorus and zinc, and of ear leaf phosphorus and zinc 20 day after silking. Differences among inbreds were significantly different for kernel zinc. Differences among hybrids were significant for all attributes measured. In general there tended to be anincrease in tissue phosphorus concentration and a decrease in tissue zinc concentration as the rate of phosphorus application was increased, although these differences were not always statistically significant. They were significant for concentration of ear leaf zinc in the inbreds and for concentration of ear leaf phosphorus in the hybrids. General combining ability effects were highly significant for all attributes measured, indicating the importance of additive gene action. Significance of specific combining ability effects for hernel and ear leaf phosphorus and for ear leaf zinc indicated non-additive gene action although all attributes appeared to be affected to a greater extent by additive gene effects.
