The features of two major genes affecting OR are described. The first is an autosomal gene (FecL), still not identified, but localized on chromosome 11 and for which a single haplotype (7markers) permits to determine the animal genotype. The second is a new mutation found in the BMP15 gene (chromosome X; FecXL). OR measured in an experimental farm show that the FecL gene effect is about 1.6 and does not present dominance. For the FecXL mutation the effect at the heterozygous level is about 2.2; at the homozygous level, ewes are sterile. In the commercial population about 40% and 11% of the ewes carry the FecL or the FecXL mutation respectively. FecL carriers have multiple origins while all genotyped FecXL carrier animals have a common ancestor. Due to the frequency and the effect of these genes, their eradication could not be considered and heterozygous ewes should be maintained in the commercial flocks. |
