Selection indices were developed by incorporating 5 pre-slaughter traits (pre-slaughter body weight, body length, height at withers, heart-girth and paunch-girth) and carcass weight in different combinations to know which and how many traits combine best in a index that has maximum relative efficiency and genetic progress for most of the traits. The expected genetic gain in carcass weight (0.51 kg) was highest in the index no. 8 involving pre-slaughter weight and heart-girth. Index with pre-slaughter body weight (no. 6, 7,8,9, 15, 16, 19 to 23) had better expected genetic gain in carcass yield than those developed without incorporating pre-slaughter body weight. |
