Abstract: In two studies, each of three levels of avoparcin (15, 30 and 45 mg/kg) and a single level of monensin (15 mg/kg) were included in pelleted rations fed ad libitum to early weaned lowland lambs (Experiment 1) and to Scottish Blackface store lambs (Experiment 2) and compared with untreated controls. In Experiment 1 inclusion of avoparcin or monensin significantly reduced feed intake and improved feed conversion efficiency compared to control lambs. Other indices of animal performance, such as daily liveweight gain, were not affected. In Experiment 2 avoparcin significantly improved feed conversion efficiency and increased both feed intake and daily liveweight gain. All aspects of animal performance were similar in the monensin and control groups in Experiment 2. The results in relation to the optimum level of avoparcin inclusion were equivocal; feed intake declined and feed conversion efficiency improved with increasing level in Experiment 1 but there was no effect of level of avoparcin on feed intake, feed conversion efficiency or liveweight gain in Experiment 2. |
