[Pricklypear (Opuntia ficus-indica) cladodes utilization to replace alfafa hay as supplementary summer forage for milking goats]. Abstract: A study to determine the effect of different levels of alfalfa hay and pricklypear cladodes (Opuntia ficus-indica) supplementation on liveweights and milk yields of local goats fed on rangeland was conducted in Las Cardas Agricultural Experiment Station. Five treatments consisting of: T1) control on rangeland without supplementation; T2) rangeland and alfalfa hay ad libidum; T3) rangeland, 84% alfalfa hay and 16% cladodes; T4) rangeland, 79% hay and 21% cladodes and T5) rangeland, 66% hay and 34% cladodes were evaluated. Both hay and cladodes were provided once chopped and their proportion was estimated on a dry matter basis. Ten goats at their fourth month of milk production were considered per treatment. They were kept in the range paddocks in the daytime and in stockyards at night when supplements were provided. Daily intake was determined per animal in treatments T3; T4 and T5, and per group in treatments T2. The contents of moisture, organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME) were analized in each supplement fraction. Live weight was weekly recorded since the beginning of the experiment up to 8 weeks later. Simultaneously three controls of milk production were performed a week. Results proved that the tested supplement may increase milk production at significant levels. From an increment of 55,4% when only hay was provided, hay replacement with 16, 21 and 34% cladodes favoured even large yields: 93,8, 103,6 and 125%. Under local conditions up to 34% hay may be replaced by cladodes to supplement goats fed on rangeland, to stimulate milk production. This is attributed to the high water contents in the cactus tissue. For this reason the utilization of pricklypear cladodes as a summer supplement is of great relevance to increase milk production in local herds.
