Abstract: The pneumonias of sheep are reviewed withemphasis on aetiology, where there is evidenceimplicating an infectious agent The importance of maedi and pulmonary ade-nomatosis lies in their slow development, theextent of losses experienced in intensively runsheep and the undefined aetiology of the adenomatosis Parainffuenza type 3 (PI3) is, at present, theonly known respiratory virus which is analogous toviral agents occurring in other species. Infectionwith PI3 virus is widespread. Experimental andlimited epidemiological studies indicate that PI3virus can act as a respiratory pathogen, but severeclinical iIIness or persistent pulmonary lesionscan not be attributed to the virus alone. Future studies will probably reveal a numberof viral causes of respiratory disease in sheepand substantiate the role of chlamydiae and myco-plasmas as primary lung pathogens in this species. |
