Abstract: Data on carcass traits of 176 male castrated goats (51, Black Bengal; 77, Jamunapari .times. Black Bengal; and 48, Beetal .times. Black Bengal) were analysed to study the effect of genetic group, age and weight at slaughter, and weaning weight at 3 months of age. No significant difference was observed between purebred Black Bengal and crossbreds for carcass traits under study except hot-carcass weight. Age at slaughter had significant effect on dressing %, on empty live weight (ELW) and proportion of loin with flank, rack and fore-shank to the total carcass weight. Weight at slaughter had significant effect on hot carcass weight, dressing % based on pre-slaughter weight (PSW), loin-eye area and percentage of cuts, viz. legs, loin with flank, rack, breast, brisket and fore-shank and dressing % on ELW. Weaning weight as covariate had significant effect on hot-carcass weight, dressing %, loin-eye area, rack, brisket and neck percentage. Linear positive relationship was observed between weight at slaughter and hot-carcass weight, dressing %, loin-eye area and percentage of loin with flank, rack and brisket. Bone % had negative linear relation with weight at slaughter. Carcass traits had moderate to high heritability. The genetic and phenotypic correlations of pre-slaughter traits, viz. body weight, body length at withers and heart-girth with carcass traits (hot-carcass weight, dressing % and loin-eye muscle area), were positive and high in magnitude. Bone % had negative genetic and phenotypic association with pre-slaughter weight and body measurements under study.
