Abstract: Relationships between frequency of suckling, lamb growth and oestrous behaviour during the first 12 weeks after parturition were studied with thirty-four Merino ewes rearing single lambs. There were no significant correlations between frequency of suckling and lamb growth or between lamb growth and interval from parturition to first oestrus. However, the interval between parturition and first oestrus was correlated with frequency of suckling during the first 2 weeks post-partum (r=0·48, P<0·01). This relationship points to suckling behaviour early in lactation as a possible mechanism regulating the duration of post-partum anoestrus in ewes. |
