The sensitivity of the ovary to gonadotrophic stimulation was tested in Merino and crossbred ewes which had been fed so as to either gain (high plane) or lose (low plane) body mass over a fivemonth period. The release of endogenous luteinizing hormone (LH) was blocked by daily injections of progesterone and the ovaries were stimulated by injecting the ewes with various doses of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). Undernutrition had no marked influence on ovulation, but the ovaries of the ewes on the high plane of nutrition tended to contain more ovarian fluid than on the low plane of feeding. There was also a tendency for ewe~ which gained body mass to exhibit a greater ovarian mass than ewes which were underfed. The crossbred ewes showed a greater response to HCG than the Merino ewes. |
