A cytochemical study at the ultrastructural level shows that several carbohydrate-containing substances are present in the acroplasm as soon as the proacosomic vesicles are synthesized. These substances fill the acrosomic granule during the early stages of spermiogenesis and then are sequentially avacuated from it during the cap phase of acrosome development. They attain their definitive location in the elongating spermatids' acrosomes throughout sequential phases. This results in the subdivision of the organelle into different regions according to their cytochemical affinities. |
