Abstract: Digestibility trials, using the lignin-ratio technique, were conducted with sheep grazing the exotics Agropyron cristatum, A. elongatum, A. intermedium and A. trichophorum, each at four stages of maturity. Alongside this series, the indigenous A. inerme and A. smithii, in addition to Salsola kali var. tenuifolia (Russian thistle) and Bassia hyssopifolia (smother weed) were each examined at three stages of maturity. Palatability observations were recorded in the above trials and also in another series when the above species plus Sitanion hystrix and Oryzopsis hymenoides were grazed by cattle and sheep. Both types of animals consumed the more nutritious portions and the selectivity became more marked with advancing herbage maturity. Differences in composition between the available and the consumed herbage suggested sheep exercised a greater selection than cattle for the more nutritious portions. |
