Angora goat does in anoestrus were injected with pregnant mare serum (PMS) and/or human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) immediately following withdrawal of a methyl-acetoxy-progesterone impregnated intravaginal (MAP) sponge. After recording the incidence of oestrus, the does were hand mated. Between 50 and 80 hours following oestrus, laparotomy was performed to observe ovarian activity in a representative number of does in each group. All does were penned until lambing. According to the results: (a) MAP sponges only and followed by an injection of 500 1U PMS or a combination of 500 1U PMS + 250 HCG, induced breeding activity; (b) although 500 1U PMS stimulated follicular growth and ovulation rate, an additional 250 1U HCG increased ovulation rate even more; (c) follicular development was stimulated by 500 1U HCG but suppressed oestrous behaviour; and (d) several cases of quiet ovulations occurred in all treatment groups. |
