Abstract: Bilaterally ovulating sheep were unilaterally hysterectomized on day 1 of an estrous cycle, and half the sheep were given progesterone on days 1 through 4. On day 14, mean follicular fluid weight and percentage of follicular fluid per ovary in progesterone-treated ewes were 496 mg. and 24.1%, respectively, on the side of the retained horn and were 704 mg. and 30.4% on the side of the removed horn. In ewes which were not given progesterone, the values were 638 mg. and 30.2%, respectively, on the side of the retained horn and were 669 mg. and 29.8% on the side of the removed horn. These results indicate that the effect of exogenous progesterone on the ovarian follicles involves, at least in part, a unilateral utero-ovarian mechanism |
