Abstract: Ten samples of banana stalk of different varieties of unknown origin and one sample of robusta (Musa cavendishi) were analysed for proximate composition and fibre fractions. On average, the stalks contained 9.8% dry matter (DM) and 8.8% crude protein, 31.7% crude fibre, 35.2% cellulose, 18.7% hemicellulose and 9.2% lignin in DM. The stalk of robusta had similar values. A 45-day feeding trial was conducted with three adult fistulated goats. The banana stalk provided 22% of the total dry matter consumed. The body weight of the bucks and the bacterial and protozoal populations of rumen liquor were recorded. Studies of digestion in vitro revealed that 50% of the total dry matter of the ground banana stalk disappeared after 24 h fermentation. The digestibility of cellulose, NDF and ADF after 24 h fermentation was 25.2, 28.7 and 19.5%, respectively. After 48 h fermentation, the dry matter digestibility was increased to 52.3%, NDF to 41.0% and ADF to 38.6%. |
