(1) Caeo Forest was planted by the Forestry Commission between 1931 and 1941, principally with Picea sitchensis and P. abies. The vegetation was recorded in 1944 and again in 1976. (2) In 1944 the ground vegetation still resembled that of a neglected heathy pasture; variation could be related to past land- use. In 1976 the ground vegetation somewhat resembled that found in local Quercus petraea woodland; variation was mostly determined by the crop. (3) In general, herbs had declined between 1944 and 1976; bryophytes and ferns other than Pteridium aquilinum had increased. Calluna vulgaris and Pteridium aquilinum were almost totally eliminated by Picea sitchensis, to be replaced after crop thinning by Agrostis canina, Deschampsiaflexuosa and Galium saxatile. The status of Vaccinium myrtillus is less certain, but it may remain an important constituent of the vegetation after clear fell |
