Abstract: The possibility of the high water content of Tama ryegrass limiting voluntary intake was investigated by feeding fresh and wilted herbage at three stages of growth, to two groups of four sheep indoors. The intake of fresh immature ryegrass (containing 12.5% dry matter) was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than the same herbage in the wilted form (dry matter 20.2%). However, there was no similar increase in intake with wilting when more mature Tama (dry matter above 14.5%) was fed. It is suggested that there is a critical dry matter percentage below which the water content of the plant may become an important factor influencing intake. |
