In the present paper, some observations made on the lambing percentahe of Gaddi ewes in relation to season and year of breeding, and their live weight are reported. Lambing performance of about 350 Gaddi ewes bred for 10 yr (1966-1975) in the autumn and spring breeding seasons, was studied. Overall lambing percentage averaged 71.4 and was significantly influenced by 5 yr period of mating (75.9% for the 1st 5 yr period vs. 67.7% for the 2nd 5 yr period). The year of mating also had a significant effect on this trait (the values varied from 50.0-90.0% among years). The lambing per cent did not vary in the ewes bred in the 2 breeding seasons. The live weight of ewes had a highly significant effect on fertility. The correlation coefficient between live weight of ewe and lambing percentage was positive and highly significant (r = 0.173). |
