Abstract: Control, protection or containment of goats represents major constraints to efficient exploitation of this species. These problems have economic as well as sociological implications. The options are fencing, herding, total confinement or free ranging flocks. Each of these options are important in respect to other aspects of the management program. Some of the various options in respect to fencing are discussed. The primary limitation in respect to fencing is cost. This is onfluenced by a numberof factors such as initial cost. skocking rate, size of area fenced and period of amortization. It is suggested that net wire is the most effective way to fence goats, but will likely be the mostexpensive and therefore may be of limited value in developing countries. Electric fencing is a less expensive option, but requires careful construction and maintenance. In areas whete woody materials are available, these can be used with low cash cost, but are likely to require considerable labor for constrution and maintenance. As an alternative to either of these, fencing constructed of single straids of smooth or barbed wire are being extensively used. |
