The main objective of this paper is to analyse the socio-economic impact of EMBRAPA's investiments in agricultural research, focusing upon the actual and potential benefits obtained, and on the social rate of return of these investiments. Agricultural research have had a very important role in the performance of the brazilian agriculture during last decades. In the especial case of EMBRAPA, an institution of research relatively young, its contribution refers to the last years. In any way, given the quality of the technologies generated, such contribution has quite expressive. The results of the evaluation of return on investiments in research developed by EMBRAPA, both at a global level as in the area covered by projects 1249/BR (World Bank) and PROCENSUL I (Inter-american Development Bank), and at the National Agricultural Research Centers for wheat and for soybeans, have showed a high social return. The volumes of benefits resulting from the technologies generated by the research has more than compensated for the resources originally invested. Furthermore, the research work in progress by EMBRAPA's units already presents empirical evidence which allow us to foresee the maintenance of future high social rates of return on investment in agricultural research.
