There is need to increase farmer's income and to conserve foreign exchange, presently spent on importation of food and feed. Developing countries need more and more meat productis as standard of livin incrases. Soybean in a good source of vegetable oil and an excellent one of protein for use as feed. In Belize, intensive studies on soybean production were initiated in 1982. On staton and-farm research has led to the development of technology packages for the production of soybean. Yield obtained is comparable to that in the region. Two crops can be produced each year, reducing expenses on seed and on storage for round the year utilization. The farmers, specially the smaller ones, do not have machinery required for soybean production. They are being facilita- ted to obtain the same. Planters, sprayers, cutter bars, threshers and combine harvesters are commercially available in the world market for various levels of production. For a situation where a combine harvester cannot be used, a cutter ber is needed which can windrow or bundle the cup plants, to reduce labour input. In the absence of an oil mill, full-fat soybean is being used to raise broilers and swine. A roaster was preferred over an extruder because of lower capital and recurring expenditure. |
