Soybean virus multiply only in living cells. Strains of viruses such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV) are determined by symptoms caused on differential cultivars of soybeans. Characteristics of viruses that infect soybeans include 1) a comnpostition of protein plus either RNA (ribonucleic acid) or DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), with 2) filamentous, spherical or bacilliform morphology, and 3) submicroscopic size. About 25% of the at least 83 viruses, reported to infect soybean occur naturally and may cause economic damage. Most are transmitted by insects. Weather and wind patterns are key in the epidemiology of virus movement inter-state/country. Some of these viruses are seed borne, which has aided their world-wide distribution. Symptoms of disease that aid in diagnosis of virus infections include foliar color changes (from normal green to a mottle or mosaic or reddening), leaf and plant studing, leaf malformations, ringspots and/or necrosis. Some virus infections are symptomless (latent); the occurrence of several viruses in the same plant confounds the ability to provide an accurate diagnosis by symptomatolgy. The major viruses on soybean are SMV, soybean dwarf virus (SDV), bean pod mottle virue (BPMV), cowpea chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV), peanut mottle virus (PMV), tobacco ringspot virus (TRSV), and tobacco streak virus (TSV). Viruses that occur naturally and cause minor or severe problems virus (TSV).
