Identification and distribution of the annual morningglory species is perceived to be changin in the Mississippi Delta and identification of the species is especially confusing to both researchers and producers. For these reasons we conducted a survey of the cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] fields in the Mississippi Delta to determine morningglory infestation by species. One hundred random sites were selected in 11 Mississippi Delta counties with the numver of sites apportioned by number of acres in cotton and soybeans. Five species of morningglory were found. They were pitted morningglory, (Ipomoea lacunosa L.), ivyleaf morningglory [I. hederacea (L.) Jacq.], entireleaf morningglory [I. hederacea (L.) Jacq. var integriusculaGray], palmleaf morningglory, (I. wrightii Gray), bigroot morningglory [I. pandurate (L.) Meyer], and smallflower morningglory [Jacquemontia tamnifolia (L.) Griseb]. The most frequently encountered species were pitted and the I. hederacea comples, with serious infestations in both cotton and soybeans. Bigroot morningglory (a perennial) was found more often in cotton fields and palmleaf appeared more frequently in soybean fields. Identification guides are presented to differentiate among the various species of morningglory in the Mississippi Delta. |
