Apart from the sib test at Stations in recent years the boar performance test in the field using ultra-sonic devices at auction sales has become very popular in Germany. The main advantage of the field test is that all boars can be measured and selected before they ever produce progeny. The main disadvantage of the field test is that the boars breeding value for fattening performance can be estimated only very inaccurate from his own weight for age record because all boars are reared under different farm conditions. Carcase composition can be estimated rather accurately by ultrasonic backfat probes but nothing is known about special meat quality on the live boar. Inclusion of sib station test results into the prediction formulae for the boars breeding value islikely to improve its accuracy. This can be done by constructing a selection index which includes the boars own field test results as well as station test records of various numbers of his full- and paternal half sibs. From the data of South Germam Breed Societies (Tables 4,5) the necessary parameters have been estimated and indexes with various combinations of information have been constructed. |
