Targets set for the production of alcohol will basically be reached by increasing the area planted to sugarcane since, in the short run, increased production as a consequence of higher agricultural and industrial production is likely to be small. The expansion of sugarcane cropping which started in 1975 with the alcohol program (PROÁLCOOL) has brougth about concern in various sectors of society areas traditionally dedicated to food crop production. In an attempt to provide a concrete alternative designed to minimize the possible impact of the expansion of sugarcane growing on the other crops, IAA/PLANALSUCAR hes been developing a broad reserach and observation program on crop rotation and intercropping with sugarcane through the Project "Sugarcane and the production of food and fiber". Work related to this project is being carried out at all of IAA/PLANALSUCAR's Central and Regional Experiment Stations. |
