Seeds of white- or brown-seeded snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and brown- or black-seeded dry bean cultivars were immersed in acetone, benzene or ethanol for 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 6 hours. The viability of white seeded snap bean seeds was reduced significantly when they were soaked in acetone for more than 1.5 hours, in benzene for more than 1.0 hour and ethanol for more than 0.5 hours. The viability of brown-seeded snap bean seeds was reduced if immersed in either acetone or benzene for more than 1.5 hours or in ethanol for more than 0.5 hours. Viability of dry bean seeds was not affected by immersion for up to six hours in any solvent tested. The three solvents increased the uptake of the systemic fungicides benomyl, thiophanate methyl, thiabendizole and fenopronil in white-seeded snap bean seeds. However, in seeds of brown seeded snap beans and dry bean cultivars, only benomyl and thiabendazole were carried into the seed coats. The concentration of the fungicides within seed coats did not increase with increased exposure time from 15 minutes to six hours. Ethanol was superior to acetone and benzene for fungicide treatment of white-seeded snap bean seeds. In general, all solvents were equally efficient in carring benomyl and thiabendazole into seeds of the other three cultivars. Use of acetone, benzene or ethanol as fungicide solvent for treating bean seeds overcomes the disadvantages of treating seeds in equeous fungicide suspension or with powder fungicides. |
