In the first paper of this series (Norris, 1971) an examination was made of the "Grow-out technique" in agar tubes for comparing nodulation of legumes resulting from various pelleting techniques. It was shown that complex interactions of species with pelleting material, stricker, growth medium, time of storage, and ambient environmental features are involved in the ultimate nodulation resulting from pelleted seed. The relevance of such tests to field practice is highly questionable, but they did shown that it is necessary to take account of more than simple survival of bacteria on the seed. Therefore, to obtain data under conditions having relevance to field sowings of pasture seeds, the work reported in this paper was done in 1967. |
