Diagnosis of bovine vibriosis by the vaginal mucus agglutination (VMA) test depends upon the demonstration of the specific agglutinins that appear in the vaginal mucus of female cattle following genital infection with Vibrio fetus (venerealis) (Stegenga and Terpstra, 1949; Szabo, 1951). In this technique, samples of vaginal mucus are collected either by glass pipette (Pierce, 1947) or by tampon (Szabo, 1951) and tested by specified methods (Laing, 1960; Newsam and Monsbourgh, 1967; Kendrick, 1967). |
