The coconut is a monospecific genus and has been associated with human activities (though not necessarily cultivated in the strictest sense) since human prehistoric times. There is much genetical and environmental variabili but because of the large size and long generation period comparatively few genetic studies have been made. The coconut can certainly be rated as a crop of major economic importance; in the pacific islands it is frequently a sour of foreign exchange and in other countries it provides a steady income, a continous source of work and is an important part of diet and religion. Many areas of production are threatened by intractable diseases such as cadang cadang and lethal yellowing and pests such as rhinoceros beetle and red ring. |
