The preservation of herbage as silage is dependent, in the ordinary process, upon the rapid acidification of the mass by lactic-acid-producing bacteria, which reduce the pH to a value usually within the range 3.8-4.2. The more quickly the formation of lactic acid can proceed, the sooner will undesirable changes be dominated. Soluble carbohydrates, lacto-bacilli, moisture, consolidation and temperature, all play important part in the fermentation process and influence the final quality of the silage produced. |
