The use of grass silage as a practical method of storing roughages was first tried in this country in the middle thirties, and the practice is now considered sound. The problem has been concerned with ascertaining which procedures will always assure the production of good quality silage. (The grass and legumes, ulike corn, require special attention.) Please note the use of the word "always"; inasmuch as many people have had success in making grass silage without any special precautions, it is believed by some that such practices as wilting and the use of preservatives or conditioners are never needed. |
