Perennial cropping systems are found throughout the northeasr region of Brazil, under a wide range of rainfall conditions. Since the earliest period of Portuguese colonization, the northeast has also been characterized, especially in the interior, by extensive livestock grazing. In the present century, agriculture has become more intesive as a consequence of the burgeoning human population of the region and increasing opportunities for agricultural exports. This has resulted in a trend toward conbining certain perennial crops and livestock grazing into definable silvopastoral and other forms of agroforestry systems. |
