The bool weevil, Anthonomus grandis, is currently in the limelight as a superpest of cotton which may possibly be eradicated from the United States or even from its complete range of distribution. Seventy-nine years ago, this insect was reported for the first time on cotton in the United States, in south Texas. Now, nationwide, cotton producers lose $200 million or more annually because of the boll weevil. Suppresion costs an additional $75 million annually, and nearly one-third of all insecticides applied to crops in the nel at state and federal laboratories have expanded our Knowledgeof of the biology and behavior of the insect and as a result have developed a combination of techniques which are showing promise in large-scale field trials for eradication. |
