Ground beetles (Carabidae) were studied during 1984 in forest sites, representing a sequence of stages in a typical rotation of Sitka spruce, in Northern Ireland. The abundance of some species present on open moorland, was diminished on forested sites, whereas other species became more prolific as canopy closure advanced. At this stage a few species dominated the community. Distinctions could be made between communities representing different forest ages even though com-munity diversity was generally low. Failure to thin the crop or the lower canopy had a marked impact on the carabid community. |
