Quantitative models of the species-area-dis-tance relation, based on equilibria between immigration andextinction rates, have been tested against data for birds on 52Solomon islands. Biologically reasonable models account for98% of the variance in species number. The data are adequateto permit determination of immigration and extinction curvesand the values of seven associated parameters. The resultingcurves are very concave. Extinction rates vary almost exactlyas the reciprocal of area, but the effect of area on immigrationrates is slight. Recognition of major differences among speciesin immigration and extinction rates and in dispersal distancesproves essential to a successful model. |
